Early Summer Crookneck is a classic American heirloom with bright yellow skin and a distinctive curved neck. It's one of those varieties that's been grown in home gardens for generations. The flesh is tender and buttery with a mild, sweet flavor that's best enjoyed when the fruits are picked young and the skin is still smooth. Seeds came from a Sweet Yards organic seed pack.
This is a bush type squash that matures quickly, usually in about 50 to 55 days. It's very productive and does well in garden beds or large containers. Pick them when they're 4 to 6 inches long for the best texture and flavor. Once the skin starts getting bumpy and hard, they're past their prime. Crookneck is a favorite for frying, grilling, and adding to summer casseroles.
